Blood Amyloid Levels at Midlife Linked to Late-Life Dementia

Plasma amyloid beta (Aβ) levels at midlife among cognitively normal individuals have been found to be tied to the risk of dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) after 25 years, suggested an analysis of a community study.

Among 2,300 individuals, each standard deviation rise in plasma Aβ40 (67 pg/mL) at midlife was linked to a 15% greater risk of late-life MCI or dementia, reported researchers in Neurology. Additionally, each standard deviation rise in plasma Aβ42 (10 pg/mL) at midlife was tied to a 13% lower risk of later MCI or dementia.
